wow, fortieth entry, scary. funny how easy it is to impress one's self.

i seem to have slipped into the horrible spending-money mode. it really is hideous, because i'm spending money i don't have and won't easily have in the future, and really it's just moronic of me and i have to stop. but i'm going to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Festival this weekend, and that's hardly going to help. especially because i'll need a cloak if it's sufficiently autumny this weekend, and i need a winterish coat/jackety-thing in general, so if i find a cloak i like it's going to be very difficult for me to convince myself not to purchase it. and cloaks are bloody expensive. the nice ones, at least. and don't think a not-nice one would be worth it, really. argh. spending money you don't really have just sucks. a lot. i must must must must stop.

in other, more benign news, i've seen quite a number of excellent movies recently, nearly all of them not-very-current to one degree or another. here are some examples:

sex, lies, and videotape. steven soderbergh flick from the mid-eighties. it was really damn good. it makes me a little sad to think that James Spader is actually in his forties at this point, though. he was so young and appealling in the movie.

Chocolat. this movie has caused me to join the ranks of people who really like Johnny Depp. i wouldn't say i'm obsessed or anything, even minorly, because really i don't think about it very often, but i do really like him. really really like him. everything else about the movie is also wonderful.

Edward Scissorhands. did i mention i've been getting into liking Johnny Depp? somehow, i've always meant to see this movie, but failed. [like Pump Up the Volume, which i still haven't seen, but really must] previous to chocolat, which i watched over the weekend, the only film i had see Depp in was Sleepy Hollow, which i did really like him in. but chocolat really caused me to understand his appeal. anyway, this movie was truly wonderful, even if it did give me a headache from the tears that stayed with me all day [i am such a sap about movies]. i liked everything about it except Winona Ryder's poor [blonde!] hair. i can't believe i failed to see this movie for all those years -- over a decade since it's making! it was so so good, and so exactly something which i like.

Best in Show. i really enjoyed this. in fact, i even think i enjoyed it more than Waiting for Guffman, also by Christopher Guest. it was just great campy fluffy fun, with excellent acting and good character study.

Save the Last Dance. this is not really in the same catagory of fabulous as the others mentioned so far, but i did very much enjoy this. i just really like Julia Stiles, is that so terrible? i even enoyed the hip-hop, which is saying a lot for me.

Keeping the Faith. i think i mentioned this in one of my previous entries, but i'm going to mention it again, because it really was so good. very funny, and yet very *real*. and Edward Norton is really just lovely.

i saw Ghost World recently. it is actually sort-of-current, i guess. i have to say that i enjoyed it. Chad didn't like it; i think he was bored. i liked it, but i can't quite explain why coherently. i think it has something to do with my deep-seated appreciation for the absurd.

absurd like the fact that i've joined the Zamir Chorale, this Jewish choir. they're really really cool, i love it so far, but it is pretty weird, considering that i'm not, and am highly likely never going to be, Jewish, or even any kind of religious, really. but the music is keen, and the people seem really nice, and i just really like it lots. but it's certainly wacky. very cool that they accepted me, though.

i'm also on the Tanglewood Festival Chorus roster, yay! i just hope i can juggle the two easily. my housemate S. who did summer TFC stuff says that most of the people in TFC are also in another choir, so it should be perfectly feasible. whee! singing with the BSO has just got to be grand.

i can't believe it's already october.
